Sparta Scholarships!
Below are the applications for the various scholarships offered for Sparta HS students:
1. Sparta Community Business Scholarship----3-$300 nonrenewable awards provided to students who have a least a 2.75 GPA, involved in the school/community activities, and some financial need. Students must write a typed essay on "What Sparta Business(es) meant to you as a student and as an individual?"
2. Sparta MSTA/CTA Scholarship----2-$200 nonrenewable awards provided to students who have a least a 3.0 on a 4.0 GPA scale, enrolled full time in college, have good HS attendance, and preference given to students who major in the field of education. Students will have to write an essay on how they have contributed to the local community and their future plans to enhance a better society along with a potential interview as well. Students will be paid for this scholarship when they turn in their 1st semester collegiate grade card to the HS counselor.
3. Margaret Looney Trojan Pride Scholarship----3-$500 nonrenewable awards provided to students who have at least a 2.75 GPA, involved in the school and community activities, and a financial need preference. Students will have to complete a typed essay on "Valuable Lessons I Have Learned During High School".

Special thanks to both campuses. The students learned a great deal, and appreciated the hospitality and generosity of both universities.

OTC Career Center Applications Due March 1st

If you are going to be a Junior or Senior next year, you have the option of attending Ozark Technical Community College's Career Center to jump start your career.
If this is an option that you would like to explore, you must be a student in good academic standing in regards to credits, possess at least a 2.5 GPA, and have good attendance. Interested students should set up an appointment with Mrs. Manning to do a credit check and class planning for junior and/or senior year.
Applications are due to Mrs. Manning's office by March 1st, but would love to have them before hand to send into OTC!

Community Foundation of the Ozarks Scholarship Info!
Sparta High School students should be checking out some different scholarship opportunities with the Community Foundation of the Ozarks. Applications are due March 8th. There are 3 scholarships in particular students could further investigate:
1. Arthur G. Tesar Scholarship--must attend MSU or OTC, preference given to students not receiving large amounts from other scholarships, minimum 3.0 GPA and 22 ACT, demonstrating financial need--attach FAFSA/EFC form
2. Henry J. & Lucille J. Straus Scholarship--attend a private college, minimum 3.2 GPA, 24 ACT or above, financial need--submit FAFSA/EFC form, letter of recommendation attesting to character and non discriminatory actions towards others, extracurricular and citizenship activities, essay, and 1 recommendation letter
3. MO College of Cosmetology Scholarship Program
The Missouri College of Cosmetology will be awarding 1 $1000 scholarship per semester to students who stand out and has a passion for the beauty industry. You will need to fill out scholarship form, essay, and have 2 reference letters from your teachers/counselor. All documentation will need to be turned in by April 15th, 2013. MO Gaming Ass'n Scholarship Notice!
The Missouri Gaming Association, the statewide professional association of the Missouri casino industry,
will award two $1,500 scholarships and four $1,000 scholarships through the 17th
annual Project 21 Scholarship competition.
The goal of Project 21 is to promote awareness among our youth that it is not permissible in Missouri for
persons under the age of 21 to gamble in a casino and to also educate them about the dangers and
consequences associated with underage gambling. The competition is open to all Missouri high school
seniors planning to attend an institution of higher education in the United States within four years of
graduation.
Students are asked to create an essay, poster or video aimed at educating their peers about the illegality
and dangers of underage gambling. The entries must be published or viewed in the students’ high schools
in January or February of the contest year to help educate other students. A copy of the contest
application and guidelines is available at www.missouricasinos.org.
MFA Scholarship Forms are HERE!
Seniors who are interested in applying for the MFA Scholarship need to see Mrs. Manning for an application. Applications are due to the counseling office by MARCH 15th. One student will win a $2000 scholarship at Sparta High School. Criteria for the MFA Scholarship includes: a. Applicants interest in furthering his/her education by engaging in studies relating to agriculture or other fields of study that benefit rural life, b. applicant's participation and leadership in school, church, and community activities, c. applicant's reputation for good citizenship and good moral character, d. applicant's financial need, sources of income and willingness to work, and e. applicant's satisfactory academic progress.
Sparta Students Attend OTC's Sophomore Days
Sparta High School sophomore class participated and learned about their career options and opportunities at the Ozark Technical Community College Sophomore Day event. Students toured the campus on 11/20/2012, and seen various different programs offered such as Agriculture/Turf and Landscape, Culinary Arts, Welding, Automotive Technology, Auto Collision Repair, Electronic Media Production, Health Sciences, Fire Sciences, and Construction to name a few. Students have tested earlier in the year to match up programs that they have a strong ability and interest, and could see if this was a good "fit" for them or not.
Students can register as Juniors or Seniors to attend the OTC campus in a career education program if their credits are in good standing. Students can earn both high school and college credit for their program.
At the end of the day, the students stopped and enjoyed some Krispy Kreme donuts. Krispy Kreme kindly supplied the hats for our picture.

Juniors--Asking Questions to Prepare for College/Careers
In English III classes on Friday Sept. 7th, Sparta High School juniors participated in a learning ice-breaker game called, "Who's Your Famous American". The goal is to have the students ask questions to FIND OUT WHO is the famous American person who's name is taped to their back. Students can only ask questions in a "yes/no" format. They quickly learn the importance of asking questions and focusing in on detail. In the next couple of years as they explore college/careers, this is going to be an ESSENTIAL life skill to help them maximize and make a high quality life choice. After the activity, the Juniors learned about testing opportunities, such as the ASVAB, the ACT, and the PSAT/NMSQT. Juniors specifically focused in on why they should take the ACT exam.
UNITY DAY 2012Students at Sparta High School celebrated UNITY DAY on October 10th, 2012. Students/staff wore ORANGE apparel to school to show their concern for and awareness of bullying....Students and staff who supported the cause where surprised 1st hour with some special messages and a sweet treat! The general message of the day was simple: be good, kind, and supportive to each other.

Freshmen Orientation: Preparing for a GREAT YEAR!Sparta High School mentors provided an excellent day of instruction, learning, and fellowship with the FRESHMEN class during Freshmen Orientation on Tuesday, August 7th. We had 39 freshmen attend the event. Freshmen learned the "ins" and "outs" of our school from the upperclassmen while also setting goals, learning about relationships with others, being part of team/community setting, examining their role in the communication process, and decision making/problem solving skills. At the end of the day, the mentors enjoyed pizza along with the incoming Freshmen class. The Freshmen, not only enjoyed a great day of exploratory learning, but also received a SPARTA TROJAN backpack.

College Fair!!Sparta HS Seniors and Juniors (with at least a 3.0 GPA) will have the opportunity to attend a College Fair at Spokane High School on Monday, October 1st from 9-11 am. Students can explore and gain valuable information on the various opportunities they have in the region, state, and even nation. Students will have to return their parental permission slip in order to attend the event. More information on the event will be distributed inside the classroom setting as the date nears.........
Another Option...College FairSpringfield Public Schools will also be hosting a College and Career Fair at the University Plaza Convention Center in Springfield, MO on Tuesday Oct. 2nd from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. This would be an EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY for you and parents to attend to help you explore the best pathway for YOU!! Juniors and Seniors should DEFINITELY attend.

On Thursday April 5th, Sparta High School hosted a CAREER FAIR for their students. Students had the opportunity to hear from at least 4 different people in the workforce, and SEVERAL of the presenters were Sparta High School graduates. Career Fair was held 2nd, 3rd, and 4th hour for students.

To qualify, graduating HS Seniors must: earn a minimum HS cumulative GPA of 2.75, enroll in public college/university within their state of legal residence, plan to pursue a bachelor's degree, be a US citizen or permanent resident, and demonstrate financial need. 11. BK Scholars Opportunity: You can win a $50,000, $25,000, or $1,000 scholarship! Eligible people: HS Seniors, Burger King employees, and children of Burget King employees are eligible to apply. 13. FOCUS Scholarship Grant: The FOCUS foundation is once again offering scholarships to local high school and college students who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered or the child of a gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered person. They also have to be a resident of SW MO, and currently enrolled as a HS student and accepted into a post secondary institution. Please see Mrs. Manning if you are interested in this application---she has copies in the counseling office.
14. National Multiple Sclerosis Society Scholarship Program--For HS Students who have or have a parent with MS. All applications are done ONLINE at http://www.nationalMSsociety.org/scholarship. You may also request information at 1-800-344-4867. Applications may be submitted from 10/1/2011 to 1/13/2012. Most awards are usually between $1000 to $3000.
15. GE Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program---Online application may be found at http://www.reaganfoundation.org/scholarships. They have 20 scholarships for college bound students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship. $10,000 RENEWABLE scholarships for up to $40,000 total per recipient.

18. Dr. Darrell "Jack" Holley/MUSIC Scholarship: There are 6 $2000 nonrenewable scholarships for 2012 graduating students from HS in MUSIC districts. The Sparta HS staff will choose who gets the HONOR to represent our district via vote. We can only have ONE district representative for this opportunity.
19. 2012 MO PTA Teacher Education Scholarship: Please see Mrs. Manning in the office for an application. You have to commit to attaining an education degree, and agree to securing a teaching position in a MO public school. This scholarship requires a counselor report, your HS transcript, parental authorization for release of school records, and 3 letters of recommendation. DEADLINE FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP: 02/15/2012. We can submit ONE worthy applicant for our district.
20. Best Buy Scholarship Program: Students living in the United States in grades 9-12 are eligible to apply. Students need solid grades plus community service or work experience. Apply online at http://www.bestbuy-communityrelations.com or http://www.at15.com
21. The Missouri Society of Professional Engineers--Ozark Chapter Educational Foundation Scholarship is now available online at www.ozarkelectric.com/MSPE. There are 3 $3000 scholarships for students who will begin an engineering or pre-engineering program in Fall 2012. Deadline for applications are February 28, 2012.
22. The scholarship amount is $1000/year, and is renewable is the student maintains a 3.25 GPA and completes 30 credit hours within the academic year at MSU. Students who have at least a 3.0 GPA and some school and community leadership will be eligible and considered. Sparta High School can give away one award.
